Living with illness is not just a medical experience.

A chronic diagnosis reshapes daily life in ways that rarely get named. There is the medical piece: appointments, medications, symptom management. And then there is everything else. The identity shifts. The relational strain. The fatigue no one else sees. The grief for the version of your life that was supposed to be next.

Meet Dr. Rachel Allen

Dr. Rachel Allen specializes in the intersection of mental and physical health. Her training includes a postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Cooper University Healthcare and years of integrated care at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she supported patients navigating chronic illness, pain, and the psychological weight of medical experiences.

Her approach draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and somatic and mindfulness-based interventions. Sessions are practical, collaborative, and grounded in a deep working knowledge of the mind-body connection.

What health psychology looks like

Health psychology is the clinical application of psychological science to physical illness, pain, and health behavior. Our work is tailored to the specific medical and emotional landscape you are navigating.

Depending on your goals, sessions may focus on:

  • Adjusting to a new diagnosis or a change in prognosis
  • Managing the emotional weight of chronic symptoms, flares, and uncertainty
  • Coping with chronic pain, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy for persistent pain
  • Rebuilding energy, sleep, and daily rhythm around what your body can do now
  • Working through the identity and relational impact of illness
  • Communicating clearly with medical teams, family, and employers about needs and limits

Why it works

Illness is often treated as a purely medical problem, but the mind and body are not separable. Structured psychological care alongside medical treatment consistently improves quality of life, functioning, and outcomes across a wide range of conditions. The goal is not to think your way out of illness. It is to build a way of living that works for the body and life you actually have.

Dr. Salerno helped give me strength, courage, and a better sense of my self worth. She made me feel cared for and supported. She has truly changed my and my children’s lives for the better!

I was in a tenuous situation. Dr. Mullen got behind me in my corner and egged me on to just put one positive foot in front of the other and find myself on the other side. Currently, two years later and I’m stronger everyday.
