Young adulthood doesn’t have to be this hard.

The years from late high school through the mid-twenties involve more transitions in a shorter span than almost any other period of life. Academic pressure, identity questions, relationships, family shifts, the first real experiences of independence, and, for many, the first serious encounters with anxiety, depression, or substance use. It is a lot, and it is not something anyone should have to figure out alone.

Meet Dr. Pat Mullen

Dr. Pat Mullen works extensively with young adults navigating college, the post-college transition, and early career life. His approach draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and mindfulness-based work.

His style is direct, warm, and grounded in respect for young adults as capable people navigating hard things.

What young adult therapy looks like

Our work with young adults is direct, collaborative, and grounded in what actually helps at this stage of life. Depending on what is going on, sessions may focus on:

  • Managing anxiety, depression, or overwhelm
  • Navigating academic and career decisions without losing yourself in them
  • Understanding and shifting patterns around substance use, gaming, or other coping behaviors
  • Building healthier relationships, including with family
  • Working through identity questions and values clarification
  • Developing the practical skills of adult life: sleep, structure, self-regulation, communication

Why it works

Young adulthood is one of the most responsive periods for therapy. The patterns you build now shape the next several decades, and small shifts in self-understanding at this stage can change a great deal. Our approach respects the intelligence and autonomy of the young adults we work with while offering the structure and clinical depth that make the work meaningful.

Dr. Salerno helped give me strength, courage, and a better sense of my self worth. She made me feel cared for and supported. She has truly changed my and my children’s lives for the better!

I was in a tenuous situation. Dr. Mullen got behind me in my corner and egged me on to just put one positive foot in front of the other and find myself on the other side. Currently, two years later and I’m stronger everyday.
