OCD is treatable. The right treatment matters.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the most treatable psychiatric conditions when the right approach is used, and one of the most frequently mistreated when the wrong approach is used. Traditional talk therapy is not effective for OCD, and reassurance-based work often makes it worse over time.

The evidence-based treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

Meet Dr. Lindsey Salerno

Dr. Lindsey Salerno specializes in the evidence-based treatment of OCD, anxiety, and trauma. She is trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and brings deep working knowledge of Inhibitory Learning Theory, the current scientific framework for exposure-based treatment.

Her approach is warm, structured, and paced to your life. She works collaboratively with clients to build treatment plans that reflect what matters to them, not just what the diagnosis calls for.

What ERP looks like

ERP is a structured, gold-standard treatment that helps people learn, through direct experience, that the anxiety and uncertainty at the core of OCD do not require a compulsion to resolve.

Treatment involves:

  • A careful map of your specific obsessions, compulsions, and avoidance patterns
  • Graduated exposure to feared thoughts, situations, or sensations
  • Systematic practice of not doing the compulsion, checking, seeking reassurance, or avoiding
  • Application of Inhibitory Learning Theory principles to build lasting change
  • Support and coaching between sessions as you practice

Treatment is typically time-limited and highly effective for people who complete it.

Why it works

OCD is maintained by the compulsions and avoidance patterns designed to relieve it. Every time a compulsion is performed, the brain learns that the feared outcome required prevention. ERP breaks that cycle by giving the brain new information: that the feared thing was tolerable, or that the feared outcome did not happen, or that you can move forward even without certainty.

Dr. Salerno helped give me strength, courage, and a better sense of my self worth. She made me feel cared for and supported. She has truly changed my and my children’s lives for the better!

I was in a tenuous situation. Dr. Mullen got behind me in my corner and egged me on to just put one positive foot in front of the other and find myself on the other side. Currently, two years later and I’m stronger everyday.
