Trauma responds to specific, evidence-based treatment.

Trauma changes the way the mind and body respond to the world. Whether the source was a single event, a chronic experience of harm or neglect, or a period of your life you have not yet been able to fully make sense of, the effects can show up as intrusive memories, avoidance, hypervigilance, numbness, sleep disruption, and difficulty in relationships.

The good news is that trauma is treatable, and the evidence base for effective treatment is strong.

Meet Dr. Lindsey Salerno

Dr. Lindsey Salerno is trained in Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and evidence-based trauma treatment. Her approach is structured, warm, and paced to the client, drawing from Inhibitory Learning Theory to guide the exposure work.

She takes the responsibility of trauma treatment seriously, and works collaboratively with clients to build a treatment plan that reflects both the clinical evidence and what matters to the person in the room.

What trauma treatment looks like

Our approach is anchored in Prolonged Exposure (PE), one of the most rigorously studied and effective treatments for post-traumatic stress. Treatment involves:

  • A careful assessment of your history, symptoms, and goals
  • Building the skills and structure to approach traumatic material safely
  • In-session and between-session work processing traumatic memories
  • Systematic reduction of trauma-driven avoidance in daily life
  • Support in reclaiming activities, relationships, and parts of yourself that trauma has narrowed

Trauma-Focused CBT and other evidence-based approaches may also be integrated depending on your presentation and goals.

Why it works

Trauma treatment works when it helps the brain and body process what they were not able to process at the time. Avoidance, while protective in the short term, keeps the traumatic material active. Structured, well-paced exposure-based work gives you the chance to fully process what happened, on your terms, so it stops running the present.

Dr. Salerno helped give me strength, courage, and a better sense of my self worth. She made me feel cared for and supported. She has truly changed my and my children’s lives for the better!

I was in a tenuous situation. Dr. Mullen got behind me in my corner and egged me on to just put one positive foot in front of the other and find myself on the other side. Currently, two years later and I’m stronger everyday.
